Review for: Super Mario Bros. (NES) | Written by: Nick Morgan | -------------------------------------- Even if you don't like this game, you must respect it. This game was the inspiration to many, many games that were later released. This game is extremely fun, and it is so simple to play. You can just pick up the controller, and play for hours. This game sold over 40 million copies, which is more than any other Mario game ever sold. In my opinion, this game is better than just about any game that has come out for any next generation console. I think that this game is one of the greatest games ever. It is on the same level as original Zelda, and Mario 3. Gameplay: 10/10 --------------- This game is just about as good as it can possibly get in terms of 1987 2D platform games. 32 sidescrolling levels of fun were packed into a small, early nes cartridge, which was quite an accomplishment at the time. Each of the levels are very similar, get to the end, and touch the flagpole. I have been playing this game since I was six, and the game has not put me in boredom even once. The addicting "run, jump, and stomp" gameplay will never get old; not ever. Story: 9/10 ----------- I never used to like the story in this game until a few weeks ago when I realized that in this game, simpler is better. I always used to say that the story was too darn simple. After all, the story is the same as all the other Mario games. Imagine what it would be like if the story was complex and difficult to understand. The game would have lost some of its simplicity, which is bad. Besides, it's not like Nintendo just left the story out altogether. I think that Nintendo made the story simple on purpose. If Nintendo didn't like the simplicity of the story, they would have changed it in a later Mario game; but they didn't. Graphics: 9/10 -------------- The graphics in this game were very good. I've played a decent amount of other nes games that were released around the same date as this game. I know from experience that this game has superb graphics compared to the standards of 1987 8-bit nes games. Yes they are blocky, but what can you expect from an nes game? The animation frames of yourself and enemies are good enough so that you cannot recognize the frameskip. Everything else is nice and smooth. However, they could be a little better. Sound: 10/10 ------------ This game has perhaps the best sound that I've heard in an nes game, if not the best. There are only four background tunes, one for on land, one for under ground, one for underwater, and one for boss stages. The sound is all so simple, which is a good thing. The sound effects are good too! There is a unique sound for just about everything: jumping, hitting a block, getting a mushroom, ect. Replayability: Extremely High ----------------------------- Like I have said before, I have been playing this game since I was six years old, and I have not gotten old of it once. I am excited everytime I access the same warp that I have accessed hundreds of times. I get delighted every time I beat the same boss that I have beaten so many times over and over again. This game is simply one of those rare games that you do not lose interest in. Overall: 10/10 -------------- This is one of the few games that truly deserves a perfect score. There are only a half dozen games that can compete with this game. Like I have said so many times in this review: the game just simply does not get old. Try playing it, you'll agree with me.
