Well, the title says it all! Lets start by posting any and all ideas for discussion and then lets start discussing them!

A simple question -- and for most I can guess the answer but it is a place to start -- Did you read the book first or see the movies !

I definitely read the book first ( a long time ago ) but I did enjoy the movies.

I have seen Aragon spelled Aragorn -- most recently on the Wiki site --- what to the experts know about that ?

Oh I definitely read the books first waaaaaaay before the movies came out....fourteen times to be exact..

The moves were ok but they left out some suff and included some things that weren't in the books. Actually. I can't remeber the exact name of aragon/aragorn...I think aragon is correct. Hopefully we can get this thread going and keep it going for quite a few pages.

Wow -- now that is impressive --- 14 times --- I can imagine that you are well prepared for this discussion -- I think I should have read the book again more recently ! I will do my best however.

I agree that the movies were incorrect in many places but I enjoyed them -- I know for a purist and some one that is very very well informed they had many flaws. Even so it was wonderful to see places like Rivendell and
so many other things in the book I had only imagined. I think they did a reasonably good job.

Do you enjoy the poetry in the book and if so what is your favorite ?

I did enjoy the poetry in the book although I don't know if I can determine a favorite. I think that any of the ones dealing with elves or the past history would be my favorites since I am a history nut. Oh, Bilbo's poem about Earendil might be one of my favorites...need to reveiw LorR again so I can be prepared :)

Ahh, see I cheated. I was in fifth grade when the first movie came out. I had never heard of the books, but instead my mom told me the story then we went and saw the movie in the theatre. Now, I hated reading when I was young. But the movie intrigued me and I decided to read the books. So I read the Two Towers, and then the Return of the King. And then the Fellowship. And then saw the next two movies. But reading LR got me hooked on reading, and now I LOVE reading. And it also inspired me to draw and write. So all because of LR I am a writer, an artist, and a reader. And jsut recently I've become a poet. Did I ever tell you about that Les? I'll have to send you some of my work when I get back to the states.

The main thing that I didn't like that was changed was when Frodo sent Sam home after Gollum tricked Frodo into believing that Sam ate all the Lembas bread. That really bugged me. That their version of Frodo lacked so much faith in Sam.

Let's see my favorite poem. Well, an all time favorite would have to be "The Road Goes Ever On and On." I just love that poem. I also like the one that Frodo sings at the Inn. I don't remember the name of that one though. I do believe it's more of a song than a poem though. There are a few others that I like, but I don't remember the names of them. I need my book...

No wonder you think so highly of LOTR -- it is also one of the things we have had so much fun sharing.

Like you both have said -- I need to review the book a little -- I shall look up my favorite poem and post it.

Yeah, the part with Frodo sending away Sam reeeeaaaaallly irritated me too. I don't know why they had to put that in the movie....there was no reason too. It was like they wanted to purposely change it or something.

I will have to post a few poems myself although LotR never did make me want to become a writer. I actually have a book with some REALLY neat poems by Tolkien given to me by a friend from church. It has some very interesting poems about Tom Bombidil. I think that you will really like them and will have to post them in a couple of days.

Say, who has read the silmarillian? If they have, what do think?

I haven't even read the books and that part of the movie bugged me...

Yep, that's right. I just said I haven't read the books >_> A few years ago(it was back a few months before the first movie came out I think... how long ago was that?) I tried it but didn't really like the writing style. I really liked the Hobbit though. I want to say I got halfway through the first book, but I don't remember for sure. I'll have to try it again sometime, my tastes have changed a good deal since then.

*gasp!* Better read the books then Oogy :) But yeah, Tolkien has a different style. In one sense, it reads like a history book since it has so many details which many people may not prefer. It does start out slow but gets better in the later books. Just keep at reading it and you will finish it :)
