Miraculous Gifts

Wow!! I do not have the knowledge and wisdom to add very much to this, but a thought I had: These gifts that were given, used, and displayed in (for example) the times of King David all the way through the time of the apostle Paul were indeed miraculous. These gifts were shown through men that weren't trying to get something out of having this gift. Perhaps why we do not see this kind of thing very often these days has a connection to why Jesus stopped performing miracles in front of the Pharisees. They asked for a miracle (merely to find a way to accuse Him), but they did not believe even when they saw the miracles right in front of their eyes. They did not want to believe in God's power, and it's manifestation through Jesus. Jesus simply stopped showing them His power after a while because to them it meant nothing. Our world today, I think, would not accept or believe if men still walked the earth with the power of prophecy, or healing. I believe the mighty men of King David were empowered by God to do what they did. I have seen miracles in the modern day, but they are not frequent. I personally have been a part of one miracle that particularly sticks in my mind. To make a long story shorter, myself, my mom, and two other people were able to lift a car off of a man when it fell on him after the jack (of the tire-changing sort) slipped. Four people, and one at least 2000 lb. car. I can't lift 500 lb today and I was a little kid of 11 then. I guess the point I am trying to put across is, I do not think the world (and perhaps us as well) would listen to a prophet if one did show up today. God has given us His full Word, and we can learn from it constantly.

Yes, that's a good point Panther and that's what Jesus had Abraham say in the story of Lazarus and Dives when he said "They have Moses and the prophets, if they will not listen to them, neither will they hear though one rise from the dead."
I heard an atheist giving a talk recently and in response to a question asked of him as to what it would take for him to believe, he said "If God were to suddenly appear in this room..... I might believe." At least he was honest! Fallen, unregenerate and unredeemed men will always try to come up with some kind of explanation for anything whether it's miraculous or whatever. If one rose from the dead, well, obviously dead men don't rise so he must not have been really dead! You see where the presuppositions lead. If they will not heed the Scriptures, then no sign or miracle will be heeded either.

Most of the time, their explanations are pretty pitiful too. One time for example, I was watching a show on TV talking about the book of Exodus. They said that when the Israelites were escaping, it may have been a dry time of year where the sea would have been only ankle deep, so that is how they were able to run across. And while that in itself is obviously false since it contradicts the words of the Bible, I almost think it would have been more miraculous for God to drown an entire Egyptian army in ankle deep water!

Well science has shown that such happenings are impossible. It is conjectured that there were earthquakes and volcanic activity going on during that period which caused what the ignorant Egyptians thought was "hail" (never mind the fact that they were so advanced for their period that we can't even figure out how they built the pyramids) and because of this activity, the sky was overcast with black smoke which caused the sun to shine through rather redly and looked like the river was turned to blood. Further upheavals of these subterranean forces caused the waters to leave frogs on the dry land, which presented a problem for the Egyptians, and then the flies came in because of the rotting frogs of course and these upheavals caused the Red Sea to leave a dry spot for the Israelites but it just happened that the Egyptians were unfortunate and got hit by the aftershock.
I've seriously seen an explanation like this. Ridiculous eh?

No, no. I was there. I saw it all. A do-hicky and a thin-gummy did Watasnozzle at the same time producing all the effects that we can accurately predict using carbon dating.
I think a major point to learn is...Don't get in God's way. Obey and it is a lot better for you.
