I was wondering about prayer, do you feel that you can just talk to the Lord like you would a friend ? I do mean with great respect and in a way that honors the Lord. I think of prayer as talking to the Lord, our
Heavenly Father that we can go to for advice.

I hope others will share their thoughts here.

Yes, I believe that when we are praying it is like talking to a good friend. We can tell Him anything, and ask for anything we need. Whatever is on your mind, He is there to listen, and He will answer you. It's not always the answer we want to hear, but it's the answer we need to hear.

Thank you Oogy, I do appreciate your answer, that is just how we feel. A good father does answer with what is best for us, not what we want, but as you said with what we need.

When I was a young girl my Mother would say, if you are trouble just talk to the Lord. That is what I have always done.

We approach the Lord like a child approaches a Father except that we do not simply approach a normal earthly father, in prayer we approach a Holy Heavenly father. Prayer is also more than simply seeking advice, prayer is a wonderful time where we can bask in our fathers presence. Prayer is where we can enjoy God for being God. By the way Mum, the advice that Grand Mum gave to you is sound advice.

I had hoped you might join our discussion here. Welcome indeed Jonah.

Yes of course it is a time for praise, a time to thank our Heavenly Father for his blessings, it is a time to just be in his presence. We have dedicated times of prayer and then there is the times ( which is most of the
day ) that I just need to talk to the Lord. He is in our hearts and guides our every step, it seems very acceptable to me to talk with him and listen -- truly listen -- to learn to hear his voice and then to obey. I am not saying that I hear an audible answer -- but that the Holy Spirit will guide and direct your life. Prayer is fellowship with the Lord. The day of my Mothers departure from this world is a specific example of what I mean -- I do believe the Lord redirected my steps that day -- and blessed me greatly in allowing me and in indeed guiding me -- to be with her that day at that moment in time. I did not deserve his mercy -- but he granted it anyway. Perhaps it was my mother he was considering -- but I do feel that we can pray in a way that is just talking to the Lord. I believe that he want us to consult him -- to be in touch, and to try to understand what he would have us do in all things.

I agree 100% mum, I wholly endorse the wonderful hymn "He Lives." Actually mum you said in a private message we have a slight disagreement, actually we don't. Everything you have said above highlights the fact that you have a wonderful balance in your prayer life. I truly believe your prayers begin with adoration and praise because your character displays it beautifully and that is why I love my internet mum and dad.

Awwwwwwwww

must get tissues -- I am indeed having a very emotional moment

OK -- no more tears -- the keyboard is sort of dried off and it still works it seems.

We love our internet son as well and are very very proud of him and are grateful for his teachings. We consider his words well. As Christians we should all respect each other and listen. Your congregation is honored to have you, you lead them well in the ways of the Lord.

" the advice that Grand Mum gave to you is sound advice."

My mother -- your grand Mum -- would have loved you -- I would have truly enjoyed and been grateful for the privilege to have just sat on the couch and listened to a conversation the two of you could have had ! ( I am quite sure I would never have had the opportunity to speak even if I had wanted to. ) My mother made studying the Bible a life long priority -- she never became weary of discussing the the word of the Lord. I know she would have still been a devout Southern Baptist and I suspect you are just as rooted and
grounded and you would still feel the same but what a time of celebration of faith it would have been. It will be my privilege to introduce you to your Grand Mum someday when we all make it home. The important thing for now is that we all keep our feet set on the higher path.

I appreciate our conversation in the pms -- we can only understand each other if we can talk in a loving way and explain why we feel as we do. We all want the same thing and we do all serve and worship the same Heavenly Father.

" Actually mum you said in a private message we have a slight disagreement, actually we don't.

Thank you for saying that -- it is good to know that we understand each other -- I would never want there to be any "disagreements" -- The Christian Discussions are very important to me and I hope that all will see that we all respect each other there. It is truly my prayer that non believers might see or read something there that will change their lives. That will make them think or in some way cause them to begin to consider the Lord. I have been trying to think lately what it might be like to have no one in your life to teach you about the Lord -- to not say grace at the table -- to not even own a Bible and to have no examples of Christian beliefs or behavior to learn from. To have no Christians friends that will support you in your everyday life,
to have no one to say let us pray, or to say that I will pray for you, God loves you and he will listen to your prayers. We are all blessed here, we can talk openly and share our faith because we have all accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Let us remember to pray for those that have now been blessed as we have.
I honestly can not imagine what my life would have been like it it were not for my Mother and the prayers that she said for me.

Good morning to all, and thank you Jonah.

I agree with you Les but I would also say that many times we often to the Lord in prayer for help with troubles that we have. As we all know, we can give the Lord our troubles and find rest in Him and that I believe is one of the most important aspects of prayer.

Your post made me think of this old Hymn Himura -- I love it and it.

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS

What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield you; you will find a solace there.

Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear
May we ever, Lord, be bringing all to Thee in earnest prayer.
Soon in glory bright unclouded there will be no need for prayer
Rapture, praise and endless worship will be our sweet portion there.

This is a good discussion, thanks for the post.

I was sent this poem today by a young friend -- I have gotten it before but this time I thought I would
share. What do you think ?

Mary! had a little Lamb,
His fleece was white as snow.
And everywhere that Mary went,
The Lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school each day,
T'wasn't even in the rule.
It made the children laugh and play,
To have a Lamb at school.

And then the rules all changed one day,
Illegal it became;
To bring the Lamb of God to school,
Or even speak His Name!

Every day got worse and worse,
And days turned into years.
Instead of hearing children laugh,
We heard gun shots and tears.

What must we do to stop the crime,
That's in our schools today?
Let's let the Lamb come back to school,
And teach our kids to pray!
